Postby WimC » 21/07/2019 18:45

Beurt 2 – gebied F – outflanking manoeuvre scenario – random Cities of Death missie
Aanvaller: Necrons (WimC)– Verdediger: Orcs (Bart V)
Missie: Grand assault

The Necron invasion of the isolated Orc/Slaanesh region in the southeast had been going on for weeks. The Slaaneshi deamons were nowhere to be seen and seemed content to let the Orcs do their dirty work for them. Even if the Orcs were unable to stem the relentless tide of living steel, they made the Necrons pay heavily for every mile they advanced. In the end, the Orcs decided to make a stand in their last stronghold, by then already reduced to a heap of smouldering ruins. The Necron overlords commanding the invasion force knew they had to end it here: victory would mean the destruction of the last Orcish forces in and the securing of the region; defeat would entail a long and humiliating retreat. And so they decided to risk all in a massive assault…

The sun was at its zenith when the first wave of Necrons arrived at the outskirts of the city center. Covered by a largely ineffective preliminaire bombardement (killing only 1 model, the Weirdboy with “da Jump), Warriors and Immortals, led by a Cryptek and Overlords and supported by Scarabs, Wraiths and a Ghost Ark all massed left-center, with a small screening force of Immortals covering their right. Their objective: wrest control of all 6 major ruins (6 objectives) from the defending hordes of Orc infantry by sunset (beurt 5, zijnde de minimumduur van de “random battle length”).

The battle started well for the Orcs. They lost a blob of warriors and an objective in the center but were able to pin the Necron flanking force on the right with their War Wagon. More importantly: a big group of warriors appeared from an ambush at the rear of the main Necron force (dankzij “green tide”), gunned down the Cryptek Warlord (= Veil of Darkness voorlopig ook van tafel!) and charged the main Warrior host, preventing it from advancing for a while and gaining valuable time, even if they were wiped out in the end.

The Orc’s success continued for a while, with Orcs charging onto and taking the center of the battlefield while destroying Wraiths and Immortals. As they were able to spread out across the battlefield, they prevented the usual Nephrek tactic of Necrons deepstriking in their midst. Instead, the Necron could only reinforce from their rear and the effect of the deep strikes was limited – at first…

But then things began to change. Scarab units flew over the combatants in the center and took the central objective at the rear of the Orcish center, wiping out a unit of Grotz in the process, while surviving Immortals teleported next to the objective left-center (Nephrek Necrons doen automatisch 6” bij advance & negeren daarbij models & scenery – een voordeel dat de Necrons soms verrassende snelheid geeft en dat in dit scenario herhaaldelijk kon uitgebuit worden!). Suddenly, the Necrons had taken half of their planned objectives!

The next wave of Necrons marched onto the battlefield (owv “sustained assault”), putting more and more pressure on the remaining Orcs holding the last objectives on the flanks, gunning them down with gauss and tesla fire. But what destabilized the Orcish defense the most, was first Wraiths and then Immortals attacking them in the rear (gevolg van paar keer een 6 gooien bij het bepalen van de plaats van opkomst van versterken: 6 = opstellen binnen 6” van eender welke tafelrand!). The Wraiths immediately engaged and destroyed a group of Lootas defending a tall building in the corner of the battlefield, taking and securing a position (objective) that previously had seemed impregnable.

With sunset still some time away (beurt 4 van de Orcs gespeeld, beurt 4 van de Necrons nog te spelen), the remaining Orcs holding the last 2 objectives faced a deadly crossfire from all directions. Being heavily outnumbered, the morale of these few survivors broke and they ran for their lives.

The Necron Overlords didn’t bother to order a pursuit: they had secured their battle objectives and, by doing so, had reached the goal of the campaign that had started at the beginning of the war: conquering the entire southeast of the continent!

BATTLE REPORT – TURN 2 – TERRITORY A

Attacker: Saim-Hann Eldar
Defender: Imperium
Scenario: Cautious Advance
Mission: Relief Force (Cities of Death)

After the first attack on the Imperial city of Egellonia had failed, the Saim-Hann war council wasn't keen on trying again, but farseer Boreas convinced his fellow commanders that capturing that stronghold was key in breaking the Imperial resistance in the north. Furthermore, he argued that the human defenders would eventually have lost the battle against the Eldar's numerical superiority, were it not for the disruption caused by the largest sandstorm to hit the region in decades.

Meanwhile, the Adeptus Mechanicus had left Egellonia and the Space Wolves to bolster the defences in the west, where the Orks and Daemons of Slaanesh were causing the Imperium severe headaches, but fortunately they had been relieved by the Tallarn Imperial Guard. Also known as the Desert Jackals, the brave men and women of Tallarn were no strangers to fighting in arid conditions.
Their previous victory had made the Imperial commanders over-confident and in their hubris they decided to go on the counter-offensive, marching most of their forces to territory 2, only leaving a handful of -granted, elite Primaris Space Wolves- behind to defend the city. After all, the Eldar were stretched out too thinly in the region anyway, for they also had to fight off a renewed Orkish attack on their pagan temple in the highlands of Shankar, not far away to the south-west of Egellonia. Surely they couldn't have anything left to threaten the Imperial position in the north, right?

Wrong. Using their infamous webway technology, the Eldar suddenly appeared all around the Imperial HQ in the center of the city. As mentioned before, only defended by a handful of Space Wolves, Intercessors and Agressors to be exact. These brave battle-brothers made good use of the available cover though, for they managed to survive the first volleys. But it was only a matter of time. Already the Wave Serpent transports were swarming the complex, ready to unload the aspect warriors within.

Encouraged by this sight, some of the Windriders flew down, followed by the jetbike-mounted seers. Were the Space Wolves beaten? Not yet. The sons of Russ never run from a fight! Knowing that the Eldar would have to stop firing in fear of hitting their kin, the Space Wolves charged them, blades drawn. The last Agressor tried his luck against the nearest Wave Serpent, while the remaining Intercessors jumped through a hole in the wall, seeking the scalp of the farseer. In both cases though, the marines were not rewarded for their bravery. Their attacks were deflected by alien witchcraft. A warlock came to the aid of the Aeldari warlord, and together they slew all but one of the Intercessors.

Now it was the Eldar’s turn to defend the ruined building, because at last the human reinforcements were arriving on the battlefield. A squadron of Vypers on the Eldar’s left flank got picked on by deepstriking Inceptors, then charged by Tallarn Rough Riders and a vengeful Wolf Lord, who ripped them apart in combat. Hellblasters overcharged their guns into the Wave Serpents hovering behind what was left of the building’s outer walls, but failed to bring even a single one of them down (it’s wonderful what a combination of restricted line of sight, cover, serpent shields and spirit stones can do to preserve the paint job on your tanks).

Another group of Rough Riders suddenly appeared behind the Eldar’s lines and succesfully charged a Fire Prism taking potshots at the Inceptors, but this time around the hunting lances pinged harmlessly off the hull. So far the reinforcements were yielding mixed results, one might say. More guardsmen and Intercessors joined the ranks and the rumbling advance of a Tallarn tank commander in his Leman Russ made the ground quake.

The seers knew exactly which enemy units were high on the priority target list, and focused all their psychic might on those unfortunate souls. Doomed and jinxed, the Inceptors evaporated in a hail of shuriken. A squad of guided Fire Dragons jumped out of their Wave Serpent, crossing an incredible distance in the blink of an eye. Facing down the newly arrived Tallarn tank commander, things were looking pretty grim for the Imperium.

But we will never know how the battle would have ended... A giant sandstorm, even larger than the previous one (this planet has been resembling Dune a lot recently ;) ), had appeared on the horizon, moving quickly towards Egellonia. In a matter of moments, it would reach the city and wreak havoc on attackers and defenders alike. The Imperial forces blinked first and chose to retreat, vowing vengeance...

@Bart V.: Ik moet nog zien of het gaat lukken voor vanavond, Kris heeft een migraine-aanval momenteel, als die over is lukt het maar anders gaan we het moeten uitstellen. Goed dat ik je straks nog iets laat weten?
